June Luncheon

June 11, 2014 Meeting Review

By: Carlos Duran, CFE Incorporated

Our speaker for our June 11th meeting was Smedes York, York Properties. He attended Broughton High School, graduated from NCSU, and was a two-term mayor of Raleigh. He spoke about the history and future of Cameron Village. The shopping center opened in 1949, which happened to be the same year as the first Dixie Classic. It was the first mastered planned center in the southeast. The location was selected because of the ease and access from downtown and the surroundings areas. The shopping center was developed and fashioned after the famous Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Mo. that opened in 1923. Major plans for the future of the Cameron Village include adding new residential apartments and private residences. To manage the increased traffic flow, a new roundabout may be included in construction.
