March 2016 Monthly Meeting

March Luncheon

By Haley Conover

Pairing nicely with the warming weather, this month’s meeting brought us a bright discussion of IFMA Advocacy from speaker and fellow Greater Triangle Chapter Member Michael D O’Brien.

Michael shared experiences from his years participating in IFMA’s Advocacy Day, as well as the importance of the event as a platform to inform policy makers about the critical role of facilities management professionals and highlight key facilities issues, including:

  • Energy policies
  • Sustainability
  • Tax policies
  • Disaster preparation and recovery
  • Emergency response
  • Work safety policies
  • Facility management standardization
  • Education and training
  • Smart buildings
  • Worker mobility

In addition to national efforts, Michael introduced the current collaboration with the USGBC to bring IFMA advocacy to the state level. This exciting step has the potential to drive positive policies from which local facilities professionals will benefit right here in North Carolina.
