September 2014 Meeting Review

September Meeting Review

By Connie Drake, CFM

What is IFMA Advocacy?

At the September Chapter meeting, long time chapter member Mike O’Brien, from Quintile’s, shared his experiences representing the Greater Triangle IFMA Chapter for the last 4 years at IFMA Advocacy Day hosted in the US Capital. This event is organized by IFMA National and presents an opportunity for members of IFMA to educate, raise awareness and impress the critical role Facility Management has on the environment to government leaders.  Mike, along other IFMA Chapter members attend seminars related to governmental policies that effect building operations, and take time to meet with Senators and Congress members to communicate the importance of having trained FM Professionals manage business real estate.

IFMA National is aware of the positive impact interacting with Washington leaders has on the FM profession, and has a staff solely dedicated to advocate Facility Management in the US Capital. These professionals are raising facility issues, increasing awareness and the precedence associated with the Facility Management business.

Critical priorities are:

  • Introduce IFMA and FM
  • Coalition Building
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Tax Reform
  • Implementation of Federal Buildings Personnel Training Act
  • Civilian Property Realignment
  • Workforce Development
  • Join the High Performance Buildings Caucus

The next step is to elevate the level of visibility and value of Facility Management in the State of North Carolina. Mike, with help from the other NC IFMA Chapters, will start the process of raising Facility Management consciousness to State government officials.  Creating a NC Advocacy Day will educate local business owners and members of the State government.

Mike and his team are in need of volunteers to facilitate research, execute groundwork and arrange meetings with legislators.  Chapter members are encouraged to support this Chapter effort.

Please reach out to Mike O’Brien if you are interesting in learning more or would want to help in any way.
